Because of the program's strength in both clinical and basic sciences, patients are assured comprehensive, state of the art care. The Department of Neurology has nine different independent research laboratories in the basic sciences investigating inherited peripheral nerve diseases, myelin biology, synaptic transmission and plasticity, neurodegenerative and neuroimmunological disorders

CLINICAL DIVISIONS

The department of neurology is a comprehensive department treating the wide spectrum of neurological diseases. Within the Multiple Sclerosis Center which sees over 1000 patients with diseases such as multiple sclerosis or neuromyelitis optica, our world-class faculty is routinely named in various "Best Doctors" lists for years. We have developed subspecialty clinics in Charcot-Marie-Tooth diseases and other inherited peripheral nervous disorders, movement disorders and dementias. Our Level 4 NAEC-accredited Comprehensive Epilepsy Center offers a wide variety of medical and surgical treatments for patients with refractory epilepsy disorders as well as sub-specialized care in pregnancy with epilepsy and epilepsy in the elderly. The neuro-critical care team, vascular neurology and neuro-interventionalists provide exceptional care to the Detroit Metropolitan area in traumatic brain injury, status epilepticus, strokes and subarachnoid hemorrhage amongst other severe acute neurological diseases.

The division of Child Neurology is housed in the Children's Hospital of Michigan, the only free standing children's institute in the state and provides inpatient and outpatient expertise to Detroit and surrounding suburbs with specialty care in epilepsy, neuro-genetics, autism and muscular dystrophy clinic.

EDUCATION

The Department of Neurology at Wayne State provides education to medical students from Wayne State University School of Medicine. The department also has positions for nine adult neurology residents per year and up to 3-4 child neurology residents per year. Fellowships in Epilepsy, Clinical Neurophysiology, Neuroimmunology, Neurocritical Care, Movement Disorders, Neuro-vascular and Neuro-oncology are also available for further training to exceptional candidates.  The mission of the program is to learn from the diversity of neurologic pathology in the metro Detroit area. This translates to the residents being an integral part of the program, not only in clinical practice but in pushing the bars in research, education and community service.
