Resident Recruitment and Selection/Non-Discrimination
The Wayne State University Neurology Residency Program participates in and accepts applications only through the Electronic Residency Application Service Program (ERAS). You must contact your medical school for delivery of your application, transcript, Dean's letters and faculty recommendations to our program via the internet. In addition, applicants must apply through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP).
Successful applicants must exhibit strong qualifications for the neurology career they wish to pursue. Candidates should possess the following qualities:

- Physical and mental stamina
- Ability to learn and function in a variety of settings
WSU/DMC Neurology residency is open to U.S. citizens, permanent U.S. immigrants and international applicants as follows:
- Graduates of medical schools in the United States and Canada accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME)
- Graduates of colleges of osteopathic medicine in the United States accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA).
- Graduates of medical schools outside the United States and Canada who meet one of the following qualifications:
- Have a currently valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).
- Have successfully completed a Fifth Pathway Program provided by an LCME-accredited medical school,
- Applicants who are not citizens of the United States must apply for an ECFMG-sponsored J-1 visa, H1B visa or have an INS issued employment authorization. - All applicable medical license issues must be fulfilled prior to starting a training program.
- Prospective residents must pass a criminal background check.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What are the USMLE Score Requirements?
A. We review the entire application, just not the USMLE scores. However, we prefer to see the scores in the 90's on the first attempt. This is not to imply that you will not be considered if the scores are less than 90, as previous research and other clinical experience count towards the selection process.
Q. What are the minimum requirements for IMG's applying to the program?
A. We require that you have graduated from medical school within the last 10 years, passed the USMLE step 1 and 2 and be ECFMG certified. We require the results of your CSA and 3 supporting letters of recommendations as well as all items requested in the application from ERAS. Q. Is the Neurology program a 3 or 4 year program?
A. Wayne State/ DMC Neurology is a 3 year program
Q. Is there an arrangement with Transitional year/ Prelim Med program ?
A. The resident needs to apply separately through ERAS and NRMP for the Detroit Medical Center Transitional program (ACGME ID: 9992500060 and the combined Transitional/Neurology NRMP code is 1374999P1). If the resident satisfies the Transitional year requirements, they are very likely to match in the Detroit Medical Center Transitional program ~ if selected to our PGY2 Neurology year
Q. How do I apply for residency and what is the application deadline?
A. We only accept applications through ERAS. Please review their website for further application information. We will not accept any application information directly. You must apply through ERAS. We will begin accepting applications September 1, 2009. The deadline for applications is October 31, 2009.
Q. When do interviews generally take place?
A. Interviews begin in November and go through January. We interview the Neurology applicants on Tuesdays/ Wednesdays. If you have applied for the Wayne State/ DMC Transitional year program, the interview will be held on the same day.
Q. What can I expect during a typical interview day?
A. An overview of the program will begin at 8 am and the interviewing process will begin at 8:30am on both tuesday and wednesday. You will also tour the campus and have lunch with the residents during Professor Rounds. Your interview should end around 6.30 pm on Tuesday after the reception which starts at 5 pm. During the reception, you will be able to meet the residents, fellows and faculty. Please ask questions about the program.
Candidates attending interview on Wednesday are invited to attend the reception on the previous day
Q. What is the cut-off year for graduation?
A. 10 years. For Transitional year requirements, please refer to their site.
